ARTIST'S STATEMENT - MYRA MANDEL
I draw my primary inspiration from two sources that intertwine over and around each other - the intricate shapes and textures of nature, and the poetry of the bible. I try to express visually my personal response to the lyrical, metaforic verses of King David, which express the yearning of man to connect with the his Creator, and the poetic imagery of the later prophets as they spoke G-d's message of redemption to the people.
When I include verses from the Book of Psalms or from the books of the prophets, it is not as a caption or a focal point but rather as an unobtrusive texture emerging from the background, merging with the delicate colors and graceful shapes of flowers and landscapes.

The verses that appear in this picture, from Isaiah 41, are preceeded by a description of desperate thirst. This unquenched thirst can be understood as a spiritual thirst for the wisdom of Torah, which is referred to as “water of life”, occuring while Israel resides in a spiritual wasteland.

The delicate petals of a blue anemone, blossoming in spring and gone by summer, suggest the beautiful yet temporary nature of our physical selves. A new flower will soon wither and die, yet its beauty is only a tool for fulfilling its true purpose – to nourish the tiny seeds at its center which when dispersed by the wind will generate new life.

A red flower in full bloom balances itself on a slender stem that descends to rich fertile earth.
It seems as if the fragile, transparent petals grow independently from the heavy earth, yet we perceive that the flower continually receives its nourishment from the ground and will soon wilt if this connection is cut.
Our soul is similarly connected to its source of nourishment – the Creator of all souls. It is this connection that the soul constantly longs for, a spiritual thirst that other pleasures cannot satisfy.

The painting “In Peace You Shall Be Led” celebrates G-ds’s promise to the Children of Israel in the book of Isaiah (chapter 55, verse12) which starts with the words that appear in the upper right hand corner of the painting :
"In joy you shall go forth
and in peace you shall be led"
The large tree, growing amidst a field of golden-brown thorns, and the flowering myrtle branch at the bottom refer to what is written in the smaller box on the left, describing how the land which lay desolate while the nation was in exile, will bloom again :
“In place of thorns, cypress shall rise,
in place of nettles, myrtle shall grow”
