Purim is coming up – do you have your costumes picked out? If not, now’s the time to come up with an idea. Just about anything goes.

Purim takes place on the 14th day of the month of Adar (usually in March). In case you don’t know what Purim is, it is a super fun Jewish holiday celebrating the victory of the Jews over the wicked king of Persia, named Haman. He wanted to annihilate the Jews from his kingdom and due to the leadership of Queen Esther and her uncle Mordechai, and obviously much help from above, it was Haman himself and his family who ended up on the gallows.

The main Jewish traditions on Purim are:  to give charity to the poor (so they can have a festive meal), to give gift baskets to your friends with lots of goodies in them, to dress up in costumes, to hear the reading of the Megillah twice  (which tells the story of Purim) and to eat a festive meal.

My favorite Purim tradition is the Purim meal also known as the “seuda”. You get together with a bunch of good friends during the day and eat a festival meal with plenty of wine and schnapps on the side. The Jewish tradition holds that it is a mitzvah to get drunk enough so you cannot tell your friends from your enemies.

When drinking, one should do it in style with a proper kiddush cup. Noah's Ark Print the Rainbow Covenant

Are you looking for a special gift for a Jewish baby? Something  from Israel? Something meaningful?  I can help you out with a few suggestions.

I think the most meaningful gift one can get is a beautiful framed print that can hang on the wall in the baby’s room. The baby or young child will look at it and enjoy the colors and the adults can enjoy it every time they go into the room.

Some of pieces we offer are so beautiful and timeless that they can stay in the room forever. One example of this is the “Noah’s Ark Print series by Sharon Binder ,There is a set of three prints – one is named Entering the Ark and depicts pairs of colorful animals going into the Ark. The second one is named The Dove Returns which features the animals in the ark with the skunks in a small attached separate boat (makes you smile) , monkeys hanging off the side and of course a beautiful dove returning. The third is called Rainbow Covenant and features  a giant rainbow over the ark.  They can also be purchased as single prints – one does not have to purchase the whole set, though this would be very impressive.

Artist D’vora Black, has also created many prints that are suitable for a baby’s room or child’s room.  She has a set of “Blessings for a Daughter” and “Blessings for a Son” in many different color schemes. The text on them reads “May G-d Make you like Sarah, Rivka, Rachel and Leah”. The priestly blessing is also written in Hebrew. Some of her works include dried flowers from Jerusalem inside the print

If a “Shema Yisrael” or “Modeh Ani” print is what you are looking for then you can also find something by D’vora Black. D’vora Black. Her “Shema Yisrael” print features colorful birds and a giraffe with the text of the Shema in Hebrew. It is a very whimsical print.  Her “Modeh Ani” picture is fantastically colorful  and includes a decoration of Hebrew letters as well as bright animals and symbols around the text. The blessing is written in Hebrew with an English “Modeh Ani” written at the bottom.  She has even created a “HaMalach HaGoel” a traditional night-time prayer for children before going to sleep. The text is in the middle of the print with butterflies and birds around the border and a colorful frame to go with it.   This blessing is taken from Genesis when Jacob blesses his grandchildren.

One of our favorites and more personal  gift is the baby frame giclee print by D’vora Black. This print is made to have a photo put in the opening  with the artwork surrounding it. You can order the child’s name to be written in English or Hebrew calligraphy for a small fee. This is a very special and original gift.
